Culture

A psychologically safe workplace can be the single most important factor to nurturing successful teams.

Organisations flourish when there is a climate of trust and respect, which empowers people to take interpersonal risks such as sharing their ideas, perspectives and concerns without fear of embarrassment, blame or humiliation. This concept is known as psychological safety and research has demonstrated it can be the single most critical factor to the success of teams.

A team is much more than just a group of people

Organisations must create sustained value if they are to flourish over the long-term, and this starts with people.

However, just having a collection of talented people in a room together isn't going to make that happen. They need to be able to work together, either in well-defined teams or through a dynamic collaboration across your business known as "teaming".

This is because great knowledge work happens in the dynamic interpersonal space between people where ideas are born, shaped and refined.

The research is clear

Beginning with Google's Aristotle project, research has demonstrated that the single most critical factor to a team's success is the degree of psychological safety present. When people are empowered to take interpersonal risks, they are more likely to bring their full participation with them to work everyday.

Neuroscience clearly shows that learning occurs when there is a climate of trust and respect. This is because physiologic resources in the brain associated with working memory, analytical thinking, creativity and problem solving are made available.

Fostering learning and inclusivity

Effective leaders not only welcome the radical candor that characterises psychologically safe workplaces, they understand it is mission critical.

When mistakes are reported early, when collaboration across groups is enabled, and when people are empowered to be their authentic selves, good things happen. A climate of inclusion is fostered and a learning culture takes hold, propelling ideas to the surface.

A world where every organisation prioritises psychological safety at work is our "moonshot" idea.
